Monday Outfit: I'm So Blue

Blue, the colour of sorrow in all the songs.  Fitting on not only the first day of having to wake up an hour earlier than I already did for work (6:30 AM... blech), but the day following Alice in Wonderland's defeat at the Oscars.  Okay, so it won Art Direction and Costume Design, but I was on the VFX team, so I was really hoping for us to win that one.  It would have been really awesome.  I guess I can't complain too much, though, since we were nominated in the first place.

It's not all doom and gloom over here.  I actually pulled my Terra Nova shirt out because I'm super excited to go again this year.  In, you know, September.  But I was talking about it with some folks over dinner last night, and it put me in the mind that I can be creative and awesome at any time.  Of course, it's a little easier when you're awake, which I'm not exactly right now.  But hey, my outfit matches.

I think, however, the skirt needs retiring.  You can't really tell from the pictures, but it has lost a lot of its vibrancy since I bought it, and it just doesn't look as nice anymore.  Its main redeeming quality is that it has pockets.  I do like the colour, but frankly, all that means is that I should get some fabric and use my pattern from my favourite white skirt, since it's a good cut on me and I can make it in any colour I want.

I also need to rethink my layering strategy.  It's cold when I leave for work, but it is not by the time I get to lunch.  I sit under an air conditioner and sometimes it's super chilly, but sometimes I'm overheating.  Logistics.  Still working them out.  Of course, in a month or two it'll be warm again until like, November.  Such is the life here.

Friday Outfit: A Bit of Colour on a Rainy Day

So, it appears that Fridays are the days of rain lately.  It does make outdoor picturing a little more difficult, but given that I live in Los Angeles where it's almost always sunny?  I'm not complaining.  I actually quite like rain, even if I prefer it to be a bit warmer when it chooses to do so.  Walking in a downpour when it's 80 degrees outside is divine.  Walking in a drizzle at 60 degrees is less pleasant, but I enjoy the sound on the roof when I'm inside.

Friday is also apparently the day of posing with random Star Wars things.  I did mention I'm a huge nerd, right?  In case that point didn't sink in well enough:

Why yes, this is me, dressed as Princess Leia, outside Star Tours at Disneyland.  It was for charity, I swear.  It was also pretty awesome.

Anyway, the outfit.  I just didn't feel like wearing pants again, even though the weather was pretty crappy today.  That's what coats are for, and mine is pretty fabulous.  I'll be sure to display it sometime, it's one of my favourite things ever.  It occurred to me later in the day that tights probably would have been beneficial as well, but I spend most of my day indoors, so it wasn't a huge problem.  I have recently acquired some tights to play around with, though.  For my first two years in California, I have owned exactly one pair.  And they went missing sometime after my last outing as Princess Leia.  So I went shopping a while back specifically to pick up not only a pair of normal tights to wear with my Leia costume (and with normal clothes, I consider those from time to time as well), but some bolder choices as well.  I haven't been as quick to wear them at work largely because I walk around barefoot a lot, and would be less likely to do so in tights.  And I'll be honest, I like going shoeless.  Still, I've worn shoes/boots on some days and lived, so I should just get over that.

In any case, this was a pretty easy outfit to throw on at 7AM before running out the door.  The best part about that skirt is that it matches almost anything.  I have a blue shirt I love wearing with it, but I need to iron the ribbon tie and I was running late.  Also, it's cap sleeved and this is not cap sleeve weather.  I almost wore a green sweater that I've never worn in public, but I got because it was pretty cute and a little out of my box.  It's got puffy sleeves, which is a fashion convention I have never been attracted to, but I decided to give a go anyway.  Apparently I wasn't brave enough this morning, but another day I will be.  Probably.

Creativity tomorrow!  You're probably going to hear more about those drapes of white fabric I'm posing with, assuming I rearrange my sewing table and get some work done tonight.  Cutting is but half the battle.

Thursday Outfit: Dark but not Dreary

I kept it to the dark tones today.   Every now and again I remember it's February, and in my homelands that means it's grey and freezing.  Usually.  Unless everything's melting.  And, given the cool streak we've been on, it seemed to work out.

I have a different cardigan I've worn with this before, and the other cardigan is by far superior with this top.  They both ruffle, but they ruffle in harmony.  It's like someone designed it that way, even though they came from two totally different places.  But the sleeves are longer on this one, and it's really chilly when I leave in the morning.

Also, this top was totally scored off eBay.  Anthro shopping on eBay could easily become an addiction, so I'm going to have to limit myself.  Still, you can get some really nice deals that way.  I'm a big fan.

Another time, I'll figure out something to do with the yellow beads.  They have stood as an accent on their own, but perhaps I could do something to play them up.  I'm not sure- I don't own much yellow.  But perhaps I should, if only because Green Lantern keeps breaking stuff and they must be defeated.  Somehow, somehow...

Okay, I swear the shirt didn't do that all day, and I couldn't see it well enough in my preview screen to know to take another one.  But I do have to be careful with the poofage of this particular shirt.

I am mostly a fan of this outfit. It's comfy.  The shoes are adorable (I picked them up in a massive Boxing Day sale while I was visiting my grandparents).  The pants I would love more if they were about an inch or two longer, but are pretty awesome in general.  I like a wider cut on my jeans, and I had to get rid of my old trouser cut jeans as they had a hole wearing through the butt.  They were superior to these, but I'll find another pair I love as much eventually.  And the shirt.  Ahhh, the shirt.  I found it while on a shopping trip with one of my dear Oberlin friends in Santa Monica.  I've had it almost as long as I've been living in LA- it was one of my first clothing purchases here.  I love the embroidery, and it looks pretty smart with a blazer.  Not that I have many blazers... I should consider picking one up.  Maybe funky-ing it up a little, since honestly, no one wears blazers seriously in my line of work.  Find some patches or something.  Or break down and teach myself how to embroider.  I've got some serious embroidery I'm going to have to do on one of my upcoming costume projects, so maybe I'll dig into it this way.

Ahh, costuming.  It has been far too long.  My last completed project was Giselle for New York Comic Con in October.  And granted, I wore myself out finishing it (about two weeks total for the entire costume, and I hand-painted the floral pattern on the fabric), but it has been too long.  I yearn to sew again.  Maybe I should  put this yearning towards, you know, real clothes I can wear every day... but costumes are so much more fun. :)

Got home a little later than usual, as I got the urge to work on my Senatorial Leia costume, but had to run down to Santa Monica to get some more fabric.  Still, I managed to make it home before I lost all my light.

Yup, keeping it simple.  It's a fairly chilly week in Los Angeles, which means the temperature has dropped blow sixty.  Even my northern self will admit that below sixty, a jacket is appreciated, though I ditched it for the later parts of the day when it warmed up a bit.  I actually love this sweater a lot- again, it's purple, which is pretty much the best colour ever.  Plus, it's got the fun woven detailing, and it fits wonderfully.  It's a great little sweater, stylish and not too warm.

Another reason for the simplicity?  I definitely didn't plan it out the night before.  Frankly, when I choose my outfit in the morning before work, I'm just happy they all match.  I don't really wake up before 10AM, but have to be at work well before then.  One morning I almost walked out without my glasses on.  So, not bad for a bleary grab for clothing.

Monday Outfit: Feeling Springy

Okay, so it's not actually spring yet, but I'm a northerner, so this weather still feels very spring-like to me.  And I just got this skirt, so I wanted to wear it.

Confession: I didn't buy the boots to wear with normal outfits.  These are technically my Jedi boots that I wear out costuming.  They're great!  Comfortable, well-made, nice grippy sole so I can do my lightsaber choreography without falling over, and also super cute.  

The rest of the outfit, however, has nothing to do with my Jedi activities.  Arguably too springy for a February day, but really, it was in the low 60s.  That's totally spring weather.  I think this skirt is going to prove quite versatile, with its wide range of colours.  We also determined that it can be used to defeat any members of the Green Lantern Corps because the amount of yellow in the skirt outweighs the amount of green by a significant margin, which will be super useful around the time Green Lantern is trying to finish and using up all the resources to do so.

Note to self: put together an all-yellow outfit just for this purpose.

The shirt is mainly three things- awesome, comfy, and purple.  I cannot ask more from a piece of clothing.

All things considered, not a bad ensemble to wear to work on a holiday.  Holidays at work are the best days- you get paid extra, and they feed you delicious food. Can't argue with that.

Creativity Saturdays: Sand and Snow

So, here's my first experiment in showing off my non-fashion pursuits, almost all of which have been developed better than my personal style.

There are a lot of things I could share, and ideally they'll end up being recent things.  But, this being a busy week and me having a backlog of stuff I've made, and y'all having seen none of it... yeah, I'm going with an older creation.  This particular one is a song I co-wrote last September at Terra Nova.  Terra Nova is an arts retreat hosted by Mosaic every labor day weekend.  Last year was the first year I went, and I focused on music.  I've been playing music for about twenty years, and primarily play the viola.  I also noodle around on the guitar, however, and decided to step out of my box and take the songwriting breakout session.

Lyrics are in the description on the YouTube page.  It's a lighthearted duet about someone who hates sand and heat conversing with someone who hates snow.  I can't even tell you how many times I've had almost this exact conversation since moving to Los Angeles.

Things worth noting: we wrote it in the space of 24 hours so it's far from perfect, neither of us are particularly singers, and it was insanely hot outside (I think the temperature peaked at around 107 degrees).  But it was one of the most fun things I've ever done, and it's a personal goal of mine to write more music.  I've got a few half songs rolling around, and if any of them make their way to completion, they might go up here.

I never thought I could write a song, but while I was at Terra Nova I collaborated on three. What kinds of creative pursuits have you always wanted to try, but you thought were too far out of your box?

Friday Outfit: In a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Fact: I am an incredibly huge Star Wars nerd.  Have been since I was 12.  It's a really hard fact to hide, since I have an entire bookcase dedicated to my Star Wars novel collection, three lightsabers, and have been known to spend my spare time volunteering as a Jedi or Princess Leia.  So when today turned out to be a grey and rainy day, I decided it was time to see if I could find a way to style up my awesome thermal Empire Strikes Back hooded tee.

I actually took a lot more lightsaber pictures, but I'll spare you the picture spam.  For a while there I was a regular member of a lightsaber choreography group, but then I started working nights and so ended lightsaber classes.  So sad.

Anyway, the outfit- I know I said I should probably swear off the jeans and a t-shirt look for a while, but I'm defending this look.  I didn't just throw on my Darth Vader shirt, I made sure to wear a colourful layer underneath it.  I wore a bright beaded necklace to give some colour to the collar, which almost perfectly matched my hairband.  the purple shirt goes with my purple glasses frames, and the red shoes go with my red rose earrings.  Oh, and the shades of blue work with the tee because (and this is pretty subtle and likely doesn't show in the pictures) Vader is shaded in blue and purple.  So yes, this is my take on styled-up Vader.  I'll probably keep considering ways to make this shirt interesting.  It's really comfortable and super high quality, so I just like wearing it.

On that note- I'd like to make a shout out to Her Universe.  It's a line of clothing run by Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka in The Clone Wars, and it is the only line of Star Wars clothes made specifically for women.  The selection is currently pretty small, but it's a brand new line.  I managed to get this shirt and the zip up hoodie at New York Comic Con on sale, and they're fabulous.  Ashley is dedicated to having well-fitting, quality clothing for female Star Wars fans, and if you're a woman who likes Star Wars, I highly recommend supporting this business.  Not to mention Ashley herself is just a sweetheart.  I got to talk to her for a while about the animation industry, and it was really fun hearing about it from a voice actor's perspective.

So, yes.  If you hadn't heard of Her Universe before, you should check them out.  If you'd heard of them and were hesitant to buy, I say go ahead and get whatever it is that tempts you.  It's a little pricey, but so well made.  We nerd girls deserve to dress in style, and Her Universe is a step in that direction.

Thursday Outfit: Hunting Reindeer

I don't wear much plaid, but it always makes me think of Logger's Day when I was on crew at Cedar Campus in northern Michigan.  We hunted down as much plaid as we could find and outfitted the entire crew to look like a bunch of loggers.

The reason for this was that the camp itself was built on the location of an old saw mill, and in fact if you looked all the way down to the bottom of the lake, you could see logs that had fallen to the bottom of the bay 100 years ago.  We all thought it was pretty neat.  Sadly, they don't celebrate Logger's Day anymore, but plaid is also always in style during hunting season.

I know the plaid look is somehow 'in' right now, but I was wearing it long before it was fashionable because plaid flannel shirts are seriously warm.  I wouldn't call my twelve year old self "fashion forward" now, but if I could go back in time to visit my younger self, I just might tell her to screw the haters because they'd all be dressing in plaid in 10 years.  Unlike my old flannel shirts, this is just a simple woven top and isn't actually that warm.  Which is fine, I'm not living where I need it anymore.  But it does mean that when it's 45 degrees in the morning, I have to layer. 

Of course, I would pick a casual outfit for the day we had our weekly review, on a week when I was in charge of setting it up.  Not that anyone cares how I dress, but one day, I wear a gorgeous dress in our cave of a room, and barely anyone sees.  Outside of my teammates, of course.  Then I go to weeklies with the producer, the supervisors, and as many artists as we can cram into the corner theater... and I look like I'm ready to go out hunting the reindeer we're animating.  My timing is possibly a little off.  But today really wasn't warm at all, so I was just as happy to be in pants.  I was questioning the sandals, but I love my Birks too much to deny them.  And, as far as I'm concerned, as long as there isn't snow on the ground, I can still wear sandals (and slide on shoes are okay in up to three inches of snow).  Yes, my footwear rules are strange, but they are the result of many years in snowy climates.

Perhaps I'll do a little classier tomorrow, though really, it's Friday and I'm sure no one cares.  I will definitely not look like a logger, though.

I actually had a similar, but different outfit planned, but then I woke up and it was rainy and chilly, so I opted for a dress with slightly heavier fabric.  In the end, the only part of the old outfit that made it on me today was the belt.  It is, however, a fantastic belt.

This dress is another product of my weekend shopping, and I love it.  Totally was not going to get it, and then I tried it on and walked home with it.  This is my problem with Anthro.  Trying stuff on is free, but more often than not I put it on and love it too much to give it back.  Occasionally the fit is terrible, or I just don't like the way it looks, but I'm pretty good at picking things I like.  The good news is, my budget can support it, so long as I don't do it every week.  I saw this dress when it wasn't on sale and really liked it, but knew the price was going to be too steep.  Thankfully, the sale fairy was kind to me, and brought this one significantly down in price.  Bonus: the cardigan was only $7.50, so at least I'm not exclusively addicted to expensive clothes.

My mother taught me at a fairly young age to appreciate quality.  I blame her for this nonsense, but at least I'm well dressed.

Also, note the lack of noise in the photo!  There's still a little in there, but nothing nearly so irritating as before.  Thank goodness for manual controls. 

Tuesday Outfit: Wooo, Layers!

Okay, so there aren't really that many layers involved here.  Mostly, it's just a little too chilly for most of my collection of fabulous dresses.  Living in Los Angeles, where the majority of the year is sunny and warm, I've really embraced them.  However, today was overcast, slightly drizzly, and cool, and I wanted to wear either a skirt or a dress.  The good news is, I'm already experienced in much more extreme layering techniques, having survived many Michigan and Ohio winters, refusing to give up my skirts.

I enjoyed this outfit a lot.  I may also find myself investing in crazy belts, because they are a really quick way to make an outfit just a little more awesome.  This one is simple, but fabulous.  I will probably end up wondering how my wardrobe survived without it.  I'm also getting a surprising amount of mileage out of the shirt.  I picked it up at the last minute as a layering item when I was packing for my vacation back to Michigan for Christmas, and realized that I dress so very much like a Californian now, and my closet is reflecting that.  It's comfy, well-fitted, I love the neckline, I love the sleeves, it goes with pretty much everything... yeah, I had no idea what a great purchase it was.  And the dress is one of my favourites.  It's just so soft and comfortable.  Not to mention, purple is my favourite colour, so I cannot go wrong with this dress.

On a totally non-fashion-related note, I am saying to hell with letting the automatic settings pick my ISO.  I take all my own photos (Nikon d3000), and I've been super frustrated the last few days with how noisy the photos are.  I don't care what my camera thinks it wants, I'm going to try to keep it down to ISO 200, and just compensate with the slower shutter speed.  Also on my wish list is a 35mm portrait lens (the f1.8 kind, not the f1.4 kind that will cost more than my camera did).  After all, the focus here is on what I'm wearing, not on my street, delightful as it is.  Also, it just seems like a good thing to have.  

Speaking of my photography habit, I've decided that Saturdays are going to be days when I post about other stuff I do.  I talk a lot about showing my art and my photography off, but never really get around to it.  So, I'm rolling it into this.  Rock on.

Monday Outfit: Just a Little Lace

I don't do much lace, I'll be honest.  Is it because it's usually too frilly?  Is it because it can be a pain to take care of?  Am I just too casual for lace?

Well, I hadn't thought about it until just now, so I don't really have an answer.  And I didn't think about the fact that I wore lace, the most romantic of all fabrics, on Valentine's Day.  I just saw it hanging in my closet and thought, "Well gee, I haven't worn this in a while, I should pull it out again."

ModCloth has to be one of my favourite places to get clothes, even though shipping is a pain.  I don't say this as a slight against ModCloth- it's just that they only ship via UPS, and that is not a good option when you live in a gated apartment.  I once trekked into downtown LA to pick up a ModCloth dress I ordered and couldn't be successfully delivered to my door, and it was a long, slow journey. End result is that I still love ModCloth too much to not order their stuff, but I now have it shipped to work.  I feel a little silly picking up my orders from Manny in the mail room, but it's the price I pay for awesome clothes.

What I like about this outfit: it's easy.  Almost as easy as jeans and a t-shirt, but with the extra camisole layer.  You can't see it from this photo, but the entire upper back panel is lace, so something should be worn under.  I'm thinking next time I'll wear a white cami, just because I like the ability to see the open work, and you really can't see anything with brown underneath.  However, I'm at the mercy of my laundry and that's where my white cami is at the moment.

I thought about adding a belt to this outfit (I got a couple of awesome new ones in a weekend shopping trip), but it just didn't work with the cut of this shirt.  The site calls it 'waist cinching,' and I don't know whose waist they're actually talking about, because mine is definitely more of an empire waist.  I tried it with a wider belt, too, but that just made the sides poof out in a ridiculous fashion.  So, beltless it was.  

Tune in tomorrow when I wear... something.  Yes, I will definitely be wearing something.

I'm bad at consistency.

True story: I did National Novel Writing Month this year, and did manage to finish for once, but I did epic weekend catchup sessions to do it.  Seriously, there was one Saturday where I went to a write-in and pounded out 10,000 words.

So, I think I have to come up with some sort of more sensible schedule for me to do this, rather than attempting every day and then getting off track.  I do have outfit photos for Thursday and Friday last week, but this week?  Darth Real Life got the better of me.  But if anyone's actually reading this, you get three photos now for the price of one.  I'm generous like that... or something.

So, that last photo is today, and yes, it was indeed a lazy Friday.  I dragged myself reluctantly out of bed and said, "What is the least offensive thing I can put on without any effort whatsoever?"  Super casual for a Friday?  Hell yes.  But there is nothing not to love about the robot dance t-shirt.  I also wore my xkcd hoodie this morning, but was too lazy to hunt it back down for the photo. This right here is pretty typical of what I usually wear to work, but I am trying to do better... it's possible I should swear off the 'jeans and a t-shirt' look for a while.  I'll consider it.

The first picture, which was last Friday, is probably a better example of lazy yet comfortable Friday wear.  I adore that sweater.  It's cozy and actually visually interesting, unlike many sweaters I have owned over the years.  I'm also getting a lot of mileage out of that purple tee, which I picked up as a layering item on a whim, and has actually turned out to be awesome.  It helps that I love all things purple, but still.

As for the middle ensemble, it's another great example of comfortable wear.  I got the tank because it's super lightweight and is fabulous in the summer, but wearing it with the cardigan makes it very wearable in the frigid 60's (at least, people keep telling me it's frigid, whereas I'll merely concede it's no longer tank top weather.  Those two things seem interchangeable here).  Also, I love those red flats.  They're simple and go with a surprising number of things, and make any outfit look just a little more awesome.  They're one of my better shoe purchases.

Weekends are probably going to be off days for me, just because I like the idea of not having to worry about posting on weekends, but I'll see what I can figure out for my regular posting schedule.  Maybe I'll grow some discipline and just get better at taking pictures every day.  Of course, we'll be moving into longer work days soon, and then will come end-of-show insanity.  That will probably lead to hilarity, and possibly me slouching about in sweat pants and t-shirts.  Don't say I didn't warn you.

Wednesday Outfit: Lady Looks Like a Dude

Okay, this is not at all typical, and perhaps not worth including.  But as a faithful documentarian, I must note that today, I dressed in drag.  Now, I haven't dressed in drag since college, and even that was only ever for Drag Ball.  I'll be honest, I've always found that crossdressing for girls is just not as much fun as it is for guys.  However, the sheer shock factor for this one made the effort worth it.

I had to pay some sort of tribute to Oberlin in this getup, so CS department t-shirt it was.  It was the shirt from my freshman year- the back says "Think one person can make a difference engine?"  I was going to wear the Tree Hugger shirt that I designed, but I was wearing a racing swimsuit underneath to flatten myself out, and it showed a little under the cream color.  So, darker shirt it was.  The shorts weren't ideal, especially since it wasn't actually that warm out today, but it was more masculine than my girly pants.  I've made an effort to see to it that all my pants are well fit and hug my curves flatteringly.  I did not want my curves showing, so scrubby cargo shorts it was.

This is not at all typical of what I wear, but it was a lot of fun to see all the looks of shock on my coworkers' faces.  Tomorrow I will probably be extra girly to make up for it.

Tuesday Outfit: Rocking the Skates

You may ask why I'm wearing roller skates today, and did I wear them for most of the day?  Well, I'd wager I wore them almost as much as I wore the red flats I took to work with me, and I took the time to make my outfit match the skates, so work with me here.  There is actually a reason I was wearing roller skates, and it is a long, sad story involving being stuck on the 10 with a flat tire late into the night, ending with me having to find alternate transportation to work today.  The obvious solution to all my lack-of-car woes is clearly a good pair of Roller Derby roller skates.

The shirt is for my current project, an awesome movie that you can all see in November called Arthur Christmas. We like our crew shirts at Imageworks, and I think someone decided that just maybe the Christmas show should make shirts for Christmas.  It was an inspired plan. And the skirt is seriously a staple item in my wardrobe.  I got the original at a Gap outlet on the east side of Michigan the summer after my sophomore year of college, and I took it everywhere with me and wore it out over the course of the next five years.  I tried looking for another skirt I liked as much, but it was no use.  I cut the old one up and used it to pattern a new one.  That went so well that now I'm planning on making it in different colours.  It is seriously the most comfy and excellently swirly skirt ever.  You will be seeing it often.  The leggings are mostly because it was chilly when I skated to work this morning and it gets a little breezy when you're skating around sometimes.  They are technically dance leggings, but that just means they're extra comfy.

Tomorrow there will be no roller skates, but it will be a sight to see.  I'm quite excited. Suffice to say, there is a silly work competition tomorrow, and I am all over it.
